About the Author
L. Dodge Fernald is Senior Lecturer on Psychology in the Department of Psychology at Harvard University. He received his Ph.D. in Counseling/ Clinical Psychology from Cornell University and has served as a Fulbright Lecturer at the University of Madrid and as a Visiting Professor at Cornell University. He was the Assistant Dean of the Masters of Liberal Arts Program at the Harvard Extension School until summer 2001. His basic textbook, Introduction to Psychology, that went through several editions with Houghton Mifflin and Prentice Hall and he has written other books for Erlbaum (The Hans Legacy: A Story of Science) and Macmillan (Walking Tour of Walden Two, with a Foreword by B. F. Skinner). He has received the Petra T. Shattuck Award for Excellence in Teaching in the Harvard Extension School, and he is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association Division Two - Society for the Teaching of Psychology. His areas of interest include psychological measurement, clinical practice, and the educational implications of psychology.

Bought this book for my undergrad capstone class and it was very informative of the different perspectives in psychology. Each chapter goes in depth on the particular perspective and comes with a summary and important key words at the end of the chapter. Also, there are a couple questions that you should be able to answer at the end of the chapter. Overall, really great textbook and sums up the perspectives perfectly.

Dr. Brenda Smith, Professor Emerita of Georgia State University, is the author of Bridging the Gap, Breaking Through, and the Reader’s Handbook.  In addition, Dr. Smith has authored other books on college reading and testtaking, as well as being the general editor of a series of study skills books for five different content areas.  Dr. Smith taught Developmental Studies Reading at GSU and developed Freshman Orientation courses for the university.  She was twice awarded “Outstanding Article of the Journal of Developmental Education.”  In addition, other awards include Distinguished Alumni Professor, Distinguished Georgia Educator, and  Georgia Reading Teacher of the Year.  Dr. Smith lives in Atlanta and serves on the Advisory Boards of the Shepherd Spinal Center and the Members Guild of the Atlanta History Center.  

Dr. LeeAnn Morris has more than 20 years of community college teaching experience and is committed to helping students achieve their college and career goals. She takes great satisfaction in continuing Brenda Smith’s legacy of excellence by shepherding Breaking Through: College Reading through its ninth and tenth editions and Bridging the Gap: College Reading through its tenth and soon-to-be-published eleventh editions. 

LeeAnn is a Distinguished Faculty professor at San Jacinto College near Houston and has been honored there with the Outstanding Faculty Award. She served as chair of the College Preparatory Department and is delighted to return to the classroom fulltime this fall to teach two levels of integrated reading and writing courses. 

LeeAnn is an avid reader and believer in the power and pleasure of lifelong reading. She has done extensive research on reading workshop approaches for college developmental reading students. She has witnessed the satisfaction and growth that come from reading often and widely and has incorporated the reading workshop concept into her teaching and into Breaking Through and Bridging the Gap.

A Blaze of Light

It may be a tough go at first but if the reader works his way through the elegant and highly intelligent prose of HALAKHIC MAN, the book ultimately yields a starkly simple but profound truth--that the Torah was brought down from heaven and given to the Jewish People here on earth, so that this nation of priests can reshape the physical realm into something holy. That is the awesome task of Halakhic Man. In the words of this sage we can see, with breathtaking clarity, that the 613 mitzvoth or commandments are not collection of dusty, restrictive rituals. On the contrary, those holy precepts embody a timeless and priceless formula that changes lives and reshapes worlds.

The brilliance of Rav Soloveitchik should speak to the heart and mind of any reader who genuinely wants to comprehend the central tenets of Torah. Highly recommended.

The brilliance of R' Soloveitchik

This work, translated from the Hebrew, "Ish Ha-Halakha" is a masterpiece. It draws from many different wellsprings of knowledge, including everything from the Torah and scriptures to the Talmud. It is presented beautifully; each word is specifically and carefully chosen. For some, this book may be difficult to read, as the prose waxes philisophical and very descriptive, and oftentimes one needs to make connections within one's own mind.

The basic premise of this work, in its simplest form, is to discover and delineate the differences between "homo religiousus" and the "Halakhic man." Whereas homo religiousus, for instance, may be thrown about the tempestuous waves of emotion and transcendental religiousity, Halakhic man is one who discovers the meaning of religion through the laws, the balances, the critiques. Halakhic man seems more analytical, whereas homo religiosus is expressive and emotional. While both serve God, and serve Him properly, they serve Him in different ways. Halakhic man desires to bring God down to this world, the world considered, "Olam Hazeh," whereas homo religiousus desires to transcend the world, so that he may reach up to God in, "Olam Haba" or beyond, the next world.

However, this work also includes specific examples of man's guidelines/purpose/understanding. One of the most fascinating ideas is that of man as a Creator, also echoed, in some ways, in books like The Fountainhead. Even as God is the Creator, we humans emulate Him, and therefore, we, too, are creators. This is a very uplifting view of life and Judaism, for if one makes mistakes, we may self-create. Teshuva, repentance, is regarded as the idea of self-creation.

All in all, R' Soloveitchik expresses himself in ways that cling to the mind and make us thirst for more. This is a fascinating world. If you wish to enter, there is perhaps no better place to begin.

This is as I understand it Rabbi Soloveitchik's defense of the ideal Jew, the Jewish way of life, the kind of Jewish life his family and he himself stood for for generations. I myself reading the work found it quite difficult to understand and its philosophical complexity often beyond me.

But it is the central statement of one of the greatest of all modern Jewish thinkers. And I believe all those interested in the deepest Jewish thought should know this work.

Pioneering history of coffee

In many ways, Pendergrast's book has led a small boom in books about coffee. His remains one of the most thoroughly researched histories, and I use it in my teaching on the geography of coffee. Pendergrast covers interesting social movements for and against the bean and details the rises, falls, and mergers of corporate dynasties in the coffee business.
