A must read for any correspondence player ... and a definite recommendeation for everyone!
By Igelfeld
Books on correspondence chess are few with the content and quality varying considerably. The handful of books out there generally provide tips for the correspondence player that will help him select openings, perform analysis and generally improve his correspondence play. This book takes a slightly different approach by providing correspondence games taken from the author's career as a correspondence player. There are roughly 60 annotated games that span over 30 years of play. The author starts first by setting the stage with motivation for correspondence play along with some early games. These games generally are not annotated in detail, but I think this was done on purpose by the author to reflect the time and energy he put into those early games. As his games progressed (as shown in the book), he provided more and more narrative and variations to support the necessary analysis to understand the progression of the games.
So, what is the benefit of going through Sanakoev's games? First, his opening choices illustrate something that is critical for every correspondence player. Opening choice says a lot about the player and Sanakoev is no exception. As black, his primary defense was (and is) the Najdorf Sicilian. This lead to many double-edged and complicated positions. The author had an extremely high win percentage because he never backed down from complications (or seldomly). As white, he exclusively played 1.e4. In most positions, he looked for a double-edged move that would lead to complications. This lead to some very rich analysis with excellent insight into the the strategical and tactical motifs in the games. The end result was both an entertaining and learning experience in nearly every game. At the end of each chapter, the author also took the time to give some words of advice on correspondence play. My personal favorite is "all long variations are flawed". This in itself is the reason that chess is so full of unexplored territory and why correspondence chess really gives the player an opportunity to hone his game if he his able and willing to put in the requisite work.
So, in the end, I'm very pleased to give this book five stars with a strong recommendation for anyone wanting to better understand chess analysis. But the hidden bonus is the insight on how to steer games into YOUR territory and comfort zone. Sanakoev did this by choosing an opening rich in strategic and tactical opportunities while assuming the risk associated his selection. There is a great deal to be learned from this approach. If nothing else, how to deal with opponents with a style similar to Sanakoev!

attacking with e4
By SockPuppetTheatre
Gambit books have two titles written by correspondence players. the first claims to have analysed many queen's pawn games to a forced win for white, the other is a superbly annotated collection of dynamic games. While the first (berliner's 'the system') is a dud, the second (this book) is one of the best books gambit have published, it just avoids the eye at tournament book stalls because it is a)correspondence chess b)non-descript in appearance.
The chess is breathtaking, and like dvoretsky says (and dvoretsky you can trust on these matters) there are many useful ideas in these games, i myself returned to playing e4 after reading this book. Not only is the chess wonderful the annotations are excellent too, and the prose and stories extremely readable. one of the best game collection i own along with taimanov's best games, smyslov's 125, tal's life and games and keres road to the top (and i own about 20 collections in all).
Don't make the mistake of buying the dud, buy the masterpiece instead
