Alice in Chains: The Untold Story, by David de Sola

Alice in Chains were among the loudest voices out of Seattle. They were iconic pioneers who mixed grunge and metal in ways that continue to influence today's artists, and theirs is a story of hard work, self-destruction, rising from the ashes, and carrying on a lasting legacy.

Four years after their first meeting at a warehouse under Seattle's Ballard Bridge, Alice in Chains became the first of grunge's big four - ahead of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden - to get a gold record and achieve national recognition. With the charismatic Layne Staley behind the microphone, they became one of the most influential and successful bands to come out of the Seattle music scene. But as the band got bigger, so did their problems.

Acclaimed journalist David de Sola delves beneath the secrecy, gossip, and rumor surrounding the band to tell their full story for the first time. Based on a wealth of interviews with people who have direct knowledge of the band, many speaking on the record for the very first time, de Sola explores how drugs nearly destroyed them and claimed the lives of Staley and founding bassist Mike Starr, follows Jerry Cantrell's solo career and Mike Starr's life after being fired from the band, and chronicles the band's resurrection with new lead singer William DuVall.

From their anonymous struggles to topping the charts with hits like "Would?," "Man in the Box," and "Rooster," Alice in Chains reveals the members of the band not as caricatures of rock stars but as brilliant, nuanced, and flawed human beings whose years of hard work led to the seemingly overnight success that changed the music scene forever.

Review

“The early-'90s Seattle grunge band, long overshadowed by its hometown peers (Nirvana, Pearl Jam), gets its due in this debut book from a Georgetown graduate student. Taking center stage is original frontman Layne Staley who, like Kurt Cobain, found celebrity and success difficult and drugs an easy out. But there's also a deep dive into the band's musical influences and its impact on the broader rock scene, explaining both its roots and its reach” ―Billboard, Summer Book Preview

“De Sola explains in riveting detail how AIC became one of the most important bands to emerge from the Seattle rock scene, and throws new light on the dark impulses that drove it to both greatness and tragedy. Compulsively readable.” ―John Jobling, author of U2: The Definitive Biography

“A stellar grasp of document sources interwoven with an incredible depth of all-new interviews are the making of the first truly comprehensive biography of Alice in Chains. The story blends musical world, personal lives and the demands of the business Alice in Chains entered – whether the cut-price early days or the bombastic cash-overload of their peak success – to show how each element coexisted, impacted, clashed or simply destroyed the other.” ―Nick Soulsby, author of I Found My Friends: The Oral History of Nirvana

“A well-reported history of one of the most important and influential bands to emerge from the Seattle scene. Alice in Chains will appeal to grunge fans and metal-heads alike.” ―Mark Yarm, author of Everybody Loves Our Town: An Oral History of Grunge

“De Sola brings a refined sensibility to the tale of Alice in Chains... exhaustively researched” ―Kirkus Reviews

Great Book for Alice Fans
By Alex
This is a great book for any fan of Alice In Chains looking to understand more about the band. The primary focus of the book is on the late frontman Layne Staley. The book describes the good and bad times Layne and the rest of the members went through, even before the formation of the band. As a huge Layne Staley and Alice In Chains fan, I was suprised at how much I didn't know prior to reading this. The material in this book is well researched and backed by interviews with people close to the band. The book is awesome and captivating to say the least.

I had been waiting a very long time for such a book about AIC, and it was well worth the wait!
By VanCity
I had been waiting for a very long time for a worthwhile biography of my favorite band of all time. It took 22 years (I only became hooked after first hearing Dirt in 1993), but it was well worth the wait since this book can now cover more territory than if it had been written years ago. As has been mentioned, it's a little bit too Layne-centric but that's ok. Like most people, Layne Staley is the reason why I first became a fan of Alice in Chains. Over the years, I have come to be a huge fan of Jerry Cantrell as well. But Layne's incredible singing voice was initially why I bought my first Alice in Chains album back in '93. And the reason why I picked up all the other AIC albums of the 90s. In other words, I don't mind one bit getting all this insight into Layne's life---from his childhood to his death. But since this is a book about the band, I would've liked to find out much more info on all the other members of AIC as well, past and present. We learn a lot about Demri, which is great. But what about Jerry's girlfriend(s), or Sean's, or William's, etc? The book doesn't mention any. It's as if Jerry and the other guys have been single their whole life (Correction: It does mention that Sean used to date Mike Starr's sister Melinda in the early days). It dedicates an entire chapter to Layne's childhood and youth but only a few paragraphs to the childhood and youth of the other band members. Anyway, I don't want to nitpick and criticize this book because overall, I am very happy with it, hence the 5 stars I give it. It's extremely well researched, tremendously fair to everyone involved. The author takes great pains to present the two sides of every story if he is able to, and mentions whenever two people's stories don't match, or if one interviewee disputes the claims of another interviewee. De Sola is meticulous and extremely professional throughout the book, always presenting the information in an impartial manner, and not as a fan. He spent three years working on this book and it shows. He interviewed over 80 people who knew the band personally, including some close family members. He dedicates several pages describing the creation of the landmark albums such as Dirt and Facelift. Layne's final years as a semi-recluse are covered with as much information as possible. One sad aspect of Layne's life that De Sola apparently chooses to leave untouched, which many of us fans have known about for a long time, is the fact that his biological father Phil Staley had become something of a drug addict himself after divorcing Layne's mother, and had subsequently re-emerged into Layne's life once Layne had become famous, supposedly to get money from his son to buy drugs. The author apparently decided to ignore that aspect of the story to avoid (I'm assuming) any possible "defamation of character" lawsuit which could arise, since Phil Staley is still alive. That's certainly understandable, but it's too bad, because I was hoping to find out why and how Phil Staley had sunk to those lows after the divorce. I was a little disappointed that so few pages (about 12) are dedicated to the current lineup of AIC with DuVall. I'm glad that De Sola didn't ignore the current era (and to be fair there certainly isn't as much to tell now, since the band members are stable nowadays and appear to be on the "straight and narrow". The years of excess and drama are over.), but it would've been nice to have more insight into the band members' lives these days. Of course, the members of AIC are notoriously private, so it's always a challenge I'm sure, to find out anything. None of the band members agreed to be interviewed for this book. So anyway, despite some minor gripes, I have truly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of Alice in Chains or is curious about the band, or simply enjoys reading rock biographies. The book is also extremely well put together, in sturdy, durable hardcover.

AMAZING!
By Kayla Filetto
I am an absolute huge Alice in Chains fan. I have all their vinyls, I have met them, I have seen them live, but I have never found a good book about them and Layne Staley until now. Out of all the grunge bands to come out of Seattle, they definitely had the least amount of press coverage. So much has been published about Nirvana, Kurt Cobain, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, but Alice in Chains never got that. This book is what I have been looking for. I have studied AIC and Layne up and down since I was 16 and I always thought I knew it all until I opened this book. By page 10 I was already immersed in it. If you are a die hard fan, this is what you have wanted. I don't understand how this could be classified as 'disappointing', as this is the most information I have ever been able to find. I highly recommend reading this, whether you are a life long fan or just wanting some information, you will not be disappointed. Thank you David De Sola for finally writing something amazing and heartfelt about my favorite band.
