¡Un verdadero "Page-Turner"!

Cuando adquirí este libro, jamás pensé que sería tan bueno. Todo, absolutamente todo, está integrado de forma impecable. Los personajes, la trama, los giros, el clímax, las escenas, el estilo... Fue una tremenda experiencia leerlo. Para ser sincero, al principio me chocó un poco el título. Pero cuando por fin comprendí qué significa, considero que fue perfecto llamarlo así: Matando Elefantes.

No he parado de recomendar esta novela, que fue lo que me hizo escribir esta reseña.

Y para el que pidió la lista de mnemotécnica, aquí ponga una, utilizando la misma tabla que Harvey nombra en la

Lo mejor de este libro es lo real que queda mostrado todo aquello que nos estanca en la vida. Es la imagen típica: la familia que quiere un buen futuro para su hijo, el hijo que entra a la universidad a estudiar algo que no le gusta, la frustración que se experimenta durante el proceso. El estancamiento que esto nos provoca... Hasta que entra el personaje de Harvey en la historia.
Este Harvey es otra cosa. Tienes unas ideas y unos métodos extraños, es un creído, pero sabe lo que hace. Y ese es el tipo el que pone a pensar al protagonista (y a nosotros). El resto de la novela es todo el proceso y las cosas que terminan haciendo para dejar de ser dos tipos comunes y convertirse en gente de poder y dinero.
Vale la pena leerla. Te pone a pensar mucho.

Me he reído y llorado con este libro. Al principio tiene un tono un tanto jocoso, pero más adelante va tornándose mucho más serio y complejo. — La verdad es que he leído muy pocos libros en español que sean como este. Y hasta me he pasado largas en internet buscando varios de los términos y métodos que se mencionan en la novela, como los trucos de nemotécnica, estrategias de seducción, consejos para escritores y sobre el concepto de quemar las naves. — Es una historia adictiva. Los capítulos son cortos y siempre terminan con un gancho que te obligan a comenzar el próximo. Es un libro poco largo, por lo que no se puede leer de una tirada, pero tiene la ventaja de que dura. Está muy interesante, en especial el personaje de Harvey.

About the Author
Christa Abbott has been a private test prep tutor for more than a decade, helping her students gain admission to some of the top independent schools in the country. She has now used that experience to develop materials that help students prepare for independent school admissions tests. The approaches used in these books are based on the latest research about how students learn, so that preparation can be an effective and efficient use of time. These materials are also written to be developmentally appropriate for the ages of the students taking the tests.

Christa is a graduate of Middlebury College and received her Masters in Education from the University of Virginia, a program nationally recognized for its excellence. She resides in Arlington, VA with her husband and three children. Christa continues to coach students one-on-one in the Washington, D.C., area as well as students all over the world via the internet.

Too easy.

My son did both of the tests without spending half of the time and his score were both perfect. I don't know whether these are too easy or not compared with the real test. We'll wait and see the real result next couple of days.
Our result just came in yesterday and the result didn't match any of the two results from this practice tests, especially the first section which we score perfect on both tests. It confirmed my impression that it's too easy and give user inaccurate information about their weakness and strength.

Helped my daughter get a good score

My daughter was applying for private school and had never taken a "normal" standardized test like this. I found the book to be really helpful in learning what types of questions would be on the exam and especially on pacing. We figured out a few good strategies such as paying attention to the time and guessing when you were getting to the end of the time allotment. She ended up getting stanines of 7 to 9 and got into the school we applied to. On another note, before we got this test, she took a COGAT test and hadn't practiced timing for that test so she ended up not completing a lot of that test and got a much weaker score. For instance, her weakest score on the COGAT was quantitative reasoning but she ended up getting a 9 stanine on the ISEE. So I definitely think buying this helped with test taking strategies.

It's a start but too easy to rely on exclusively

It's a good start but the material was much easier than the actual test. This is per my 10 yo of course but he did score a stanine of 9 on all these practice tests and also on the tests that came in the full prep book by Abbott but then scored much lower. I don't think it was just a bad testing day because he remembered exactly what areas were different. For example, Hhe said the the comprehension reading had much longer paragraphs (many more numbered lines) and that the math went into subjects (more advanced Geometry) not covered in the books/practice tests.

Bible of Anemia

This is the most comprehensive work on hemolytic anemia that I have found. It is well written, well illustrated and documnented to the Nth degree. It is not an inexpensive book, but considering the cost of information from such an esteemed writer and the cost of medicine generally, it is a bargain. I recommend it to anyone who has, or is involved with, an anemic blood problem.

With the same style and clarity that characterized their highly acclaimed book, The Elements of Programming Style, the authors have written Software Tools to teach how to write good programs that make good tools. The programs contained in the book are not artificial, but are actual programs ae tools which have proved valuable in the production of other programs.

Modern programming techniques such as structured programming and top-down design are emphasized and applied to every program. The programs are presented in a structured language called Ratfor ("Rational Fortran") which can be easily understood by anyone familiar with Fortran or PL/I, Algol, PASCAL, or similar languages. (Ratfor translates readily into Fortran or PL/I. One of the tools presented is a preprocessor to translate Ratfor into Fortran). All of the programs are complete and have been tested directly from the text. The programs are available in machine-readable form from Addison-Wesley.

Software Tools is ideal for use in a "software engineering" course, for a second course in programming, or as a supplement in any programming course. All programmers, professional and student, will find the book invaluable as a source of proven, useful programs for reading and study. Numerous exercises are provided to test comprehension and to extend the concepts presented in the text.

It's what's under the hood

The tools you will find in this book are ancient. They're written in a cockeyed hybrid of C and Fortran, and they're almost hilariously user-hostile by modern definitions. If this intimidates you, look at it this way -- you're looking under the hood of modern applications. Much modern word processing, page layout, and language implementation can be built by putting a nice, shiny coating on what you find in this book.
Kernighan and Plauger set out in this book to document what they used in their labs at the time it was written, and show how to build them. Ratfor was chosen because C was not as widespread then as it is now, and for those who didn't have it, a translator to standard Fortran '77 was one of the major parts of the book. A simplified version of the nroff text formatter and a version of ed are also included for text file processing (then as now one of the major uses for computers), the result being both a toolkit and a practical education in the ins and outs of applications development.
The environment given is not Unix-based inherently, but this book is a natural companion to Kernighan and Rob Pike's The Unix Programming Environment and John Lions' Commentary on Unix 6th Edition. It should be required reading for anyone who wants to do software development.

A classic text on software engineering

In a certain way, software engineering is an art. In the past few decades, we have found some best practices. Nowadays there are tons of buzzwords out there -- agile, BDD, TDD, KISS... It's easy to get lost in the jungle of "software engineering methodologies". There is no silver bullet though. Instead of chasing those buzzwords in the hope of finding the best way to write software, my personal experience tells me that we should go back to the root of software engineering: why we are writing software, and what is the relationship between software developer, software, and machine. I think Software Tools answered those fundamental questions elegantly. Or, at least it brought up those questions.

This book covers almost every aspect of programming, in the context of writing practical command line tools for UNIX. At that time, FORTRAN was the de facto programming language. There was a big cognitive gap between the programming language at hand (unstructured, messy, low-level), and the programming model in our head (structured, clean, abstract, high-level). To address this problem, the authors proposed to build software "into" the programming language, instead of "in" the programming language. This insight is still valid today, because we still haven't found a programming language that can match the thought pattern of human brain directly. We still have to manually translate our high-level thoughts into low-level program statements. Software engineering about conquering not only the complexity of the outside world (e.g. the inherent complexity of the task that software want to handle), but also the complicity of the programming language itself (e.g. the language itself is not as neat as our thoughts). After all, there is little software engineering concern if the task at hand can be done with a domain-specific language (very high-level usually) in 100 lines. Complexity comes in when we cannot have a language that is high-level enough to match the task at hand, so we need to organize the code to better match the tasks.

The idea of programming into language is so old, yet so new. It was first proposed by the generation of early LISP programmers. They would build their own LISP from ground-up, up till the level where they can use the new LISP to solve the problem. The problem is, your language is not LISP. In fact, your language sucks. I am sure that there are good features in every programming language, but you can hardly find all your favorite language features or high-level constructions/libraries in one language. The fact that there is no silver bullet language calls us to patch up, to enhance our language, until it matches the abstraction level of our mental model, or the tasks at hand.

Software tools is the book that teaches you how to use your language to build clean and useful blocks and then get things done. It does so by building some of the most useful tools in the UNIX programming environment. Once you followed the idea of building into a language, language will not be your obstacle, and all the best practices are in fact ways to enhance the language (e.g. design patterns).

I also enjoy the writing style of this book. There are hands-on examples across the book. There is no checklist/dogma, but examples and tips drawing from those examples. You can get a lot from it if you actually try to build those software tools in C.

Anyway, do not miss this classic if you really wants to craft good software. For me, it is the missing manual for me to conquer my stupid programming language. Programming languages are and will always be stupid, and that's why I need to transform them to be MY language. Using this book to guide that transformation today, and you will be more productive when using your language.

Classic on software design

Elsewhere on Amazon I reviewed Kernighan's "Elements of Programming Style." To quote one paragraph from that review -
Brian Kernighan has co-authored three books almost essential to learning our craft, this volume, "Software Tools" and "The Unix Programming Environment". "Elements of Programming Style" spells out the fundamental rules, "Software Tools" shows you how to apply them to a number of simple projects and extends the rules to software design and finally "The Unix Programming Environment" shows you how to use them in an operating system designed to reward you for your effort.
It could be said that "Elements" teaches programming and "Software Tools" teaches software design. Rules such as "do just one thing, do it well" seem to seep in through the pores as you read and work through this book.
It presents a number of projects starting with a word count program and progressing through some filters to some fairly complex tasks culminating in a RatFor pre-processor for Fortran. All the examples are written in RatFor, a version of Fortran that adds some more structured elements to that early language.
Don't be put off by the use of RatFor, the language is easily understood and the style of programming so clear that the algorithms are easily understood. I've personally translated a fair number of them to both BASIC and C and the RatFor pre-processor design became the basis for an AppleSoft BASIC pre-processor written by a close friend.
I've relied on this book so much for the last ten years, after writing "Hello World" I drag it out and translate a couple of the tools into every new language I've learnt. I then spend a day or two thinking about and implementing a design optimised for the new language. After that I find I have a good handle on a language and how to design for it.
This volume is not for those who want a book that gives them pre-written tools, a fair number of the tools are standard issue on any Unix derivative and the code is only tersely commented, relying on the exaplanatory text. However I recommend this book to all software designers and programmers because as you work through these examples you will learn a great deal about honing your craft.

Douglas McIlwraith earned his first degree at Cambridge in computer science before completing a PhD in sensor fusion from Imperial College in London. He is a machine learning expert, currently working as senior data scientist for a London-based advertising company.

Dr. Haralambos Marmanis is a pioneer in the adoption of machine learning techniques for industrial solutions. He has 25 years experience in developing professional software.

About the Author
Samara Klar is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Arizona. She studies how individuals' social surroundings and personal identities influence their political attitudes and behaviors. Her work has been published in numerous journals including the American Journal of Political Science, the Journal of Politics, and Public Opinion Quarterly, and has been supported by the National Science Foundation. She has been recognized with a Distinguished Junior Scholar award in Political Psychology from the American Political Science Association and a Burns Roper Fellowship from the American Association of Public Opinion Research. Klar earned a PhD in Political Science from Northwestern University, Illinois and also holds degrees from Columbia University, New York and McGill University, Montréal.

Yanna Krupnikov is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at State University of New York, Stony Brook. Her research focuses on the way political communication affects public opinion and the way people express their political opinions through political actions. Krupnikov's work has been published in numerous journals including the American Journal of Political Science, Political Behavior, and Political Communication, and has been supported by the National Science Foundation. She is the winner of the Midwest Political Science Association's Robert Durr Award and the award for the best paper by an emerging scholar. Krupnikov earned a PhD in Political Science from the University of Michigan and also holds degrees from the University of Toronto and Brandeis University, Massachusetts.

The book documents the evidence for a new, extended, evolutionary synthesis, a synthesis that: confounds the creationist belief that evolution can't be described above the species-level; integrates aging and Western diseases such as diabetes, atherosclerosis, cancer, and obesity into an evolutionary context; and sees interspecies interactions both within the organism and between organisms as being critical for evolution, development, and fitness.

About the Author
Scott F. Gilbert, a Senior Research Associate at Swarthmore College and the Finland Distinguished Professor at the University of Helsinki Institute of Biotechnology, teaches developmental biology, developmental genetics, and the history of biology. After receiving his B.A. from Wesleyan University, he pursued his graduate and postdoctoral research at The Johns Hopkins University and the University of Wisconsin. Dr. Gilbert is the recipient of several awards, including the first Viktor Hamburger Award for excellence in developmental biology education, the 2004 Alexander Kowalevsky Prize for evolutionary developmental biology, honorary degrees from the Universities of Helsinki and Tartu, and the Medal of François I from the Collège de France. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Society of Naturalists, and has been chair of the Professional Development and Education Committee of the Society for Developmental Biology. His research pursues the developmental genetic mechanisms by which the turtle forms its shell.

David Epel is the Jane and Marshall Steel Jr. Professor Emeritus of Biological Sciences at Stanford University s Hopkins Marine Station in Pacific Grove CA. He did his undergraduate studies at Wayne State University and then graduate and postdoctoral studies at the University of California, Berkeley and the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Epel has been a Guggenheim Fellow, is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the California Academy of Sciences, and an Overseas Fellow of Churchill College and Life Fellow of Clare Hall at the University of Cambridge. His honors include the Cox Medal for Fostering Undergraduate Research at Stanford and the Ed Ricketts Memorial Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Marine Sciences. Epel s research focused on cell biology of development, especially the activation of the egg at fertilization, the unique physiology of the embryo and the cellular mechanisms of embryo protection. His current interest is high school science education. One area is highlighting early development of the sea urchin embryo to capture the imagination and interest of high school students. New curricula focus on the science of climate change and how students can help to solve this problem.
