A noteworthy development in the field of excavating machinery has taken place since the publication of the book, "Excavating Machinery" in 1913. The author has received so many requests for information concerning the more recent types of excavators and the newer uses of older types, that it has seemed desirable to present this work.

The new book embodies some of the material of the former work, but is entirely re-cast and largely re-written. The new text has two general divisions; the first comprising a description of the construction, method and typical cost of operation of each type of excavator, and the second embodying a comparative study of the efficient and economic use of the different types of machines in the various fields of construction work. The author has endeavored to describe the make and types of excavators commonly used in all classes of work. He has not attempted to describe or even mention every make of excavator, but every type has been treated in sufficient detail to give a clear idea of its construction and field of work.

The cost data are not intended to be an arbitrary guide for the use of any type of excavator in any stated class of work. The conditions and circumstances attending work of this character are so variable, and there are usually so many unforeseen factors which affect the progress of a job, that information of this kind can only be suggestive. The illustrative "costs of operation" given in the first division, are merely typical outlines. The quantities should be modified to suit local conditions and combined with ruling prices to secure usable cost data for any definite case. In the second division the cost data have been selected to offer a variety of conditions on recent examples of earthwork. No attempt has been made to standardize these data or to formulate the results for any series of operations for any type of machine. The author has derived many equations from his experience, but hesitates to publish them on account of their possible misuse.

I bought this book for Level 2 nursing classes that have not started yet. It has been a great help with Level 1 as well. It breaks everything down for you. It has been great for working on my drug cards as well. Nursing students can not go wrong buying this book even for level one meds. I am very happy I decided to buy while still in level 1.

Not bad for a pharmacology book. Of course, how interesting is Pharm really going to be? But in general it is easy to read and understand and breaks things down pretty well. I would have given it 5 stars, but I just don't like pharmacology. But I have to say that the seller got it to me quickly in pristine condition.

Gouache a la Moscow...

This small book (50-odd pages) purports to introduce you to gouache painting. It's not clear from the book as to the qualities of gouache as opposed to other painting media. The fact that it has been translated poorly from the original Russian into fractured English doesn't help. The painting terms used are not familiar - it refers to 'sheets of paperboard' meaning all purpose watercolor paper (paperboard apparently is what you make cardboard out of) and the 'tablet' as the board onto which you tape your paper. This is very unsettling to the reader. Then there are the obvious comments, like "The area of your tablet should be larger then (sic) the area of sheet". Well, yes... The application of paint is referred to as 'staining' - never did get used to that one. The illustrations were good but often a more detailed explanation was needed to clarify the point the author was trying to make. The book as a whole could be taken as a general guide on how to paint with water media, not with any specific reference to gouache. I was considering gouache as a possible medium for plein air use, as I thought it might be easier to deal with than oils, but this litte book did little to enlighten me as to its qualities. Very disappointing.

The pictures and demonstrations were good, but the English was poor! I'm sorry I ordered it! I am a teacher myself, and don't often find a book that I don't like. This is one of them. The second volume was just as bad!

AMAZING STORY! First time reader of Norma Jeannre Karlssons'` book and it was so much more than her blurh. This is something NEW, sure it has the alpha and the love story, the drama and the shoot em ups, but its the things I'm NOT gonna tell you about that should make you REALLY REALLY want to grab this story!

4 1/2 stars for this first book in what I hope will become another series from this terrific author. If you've read her Blackness series (which was awesome, by the way, and a must buy of you like this book) you know her type of Alpha males. Ones who don't show much emotion, (except to their women who they protect with their lives and are extremely devoted to) who don't take any s***, loyal to their family (whether it be by blood, or association) and who feel no remorse in doing what's necessary to protect what's theirs. In my opinion, this was light on the paranormal aspect. So if that is not your cup a tea, you should give it a try anyway. There should be enough though to satisfy fans of that genre, too. The H is hot, sexy, masculine, and take charge. He loves his woman and there is some hot sex. It is not every other page, however. She creates another world here, yet ties it back to her Blackness series by including Kiernan Delaney, a mob boss from Chicago. I can't wait for the next book in the Blackness series which is to feature one of the Cooper brothers (release date 2-14-15), I'll also be anxiously waiting to see the next book in this series to see what happens with Kane, Alannah, their son, and all the other characters that could have their own stories told. Type fast Ms. Karlsson, PLEASE!

Amazing!!!

I am utterly addicted to this author's Blackness series, so I was excited when I found this book. After reading the synopsis, I really wasn't sure I would like it. While I like some paranormal, it is not typically my first choice. However, since this book was free on kindle unlimited, I figured why not try it. I found myself hooked in quite quickly. It was nothing like I expected and not even remotely similar to anything I've ever read. The book was written from Kane's first person perspective. Typically, first person from a male point of view throws me off a bit, but this one didn't. I loved being inside his head.

The characters in this story were so well developed. I easily became attached to most all of them. I will be so disappointed if this doesn't turn into a series so I can catch up on how things turn out for each one. Kane was a bad man who ultimately became the only good in so many lives. Alannah was his perfect foil. She was hard enough to handle being in Kane's life but also softened his rough edges in his relationships with others.

So much crazy stuff happens in this story, but I really think it would spoil it to have too many details before experiencing it. I will just say that it is a total and complete emotional roller coaster in the most amazing way. If you have read the Blackness series and liked it, you will also love this. If you haven't, what are you waiting for?!?

Slightly Dated Yet Fundamental Reference Text for Thermal System Engineers

I'm an engineering professional who recently used this book for the study of the Design of Thermal Systems at Rochester Institute of Technology. It is written by William Stoecker, a professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and published in 1989.

The first two chapters are on engineering design and selecting workable designs. A 3rd chapter introduces engineering economics to forecast system costs in terms of future costs or translate future costs to present costs. The 4th chapter introduces equation fitting to model the behavior of subsystem components based on, say data from a catalog. This is followed by a chapter on system modeling, i.e drawing the functional flow diagram indicating mass transfer and work inputs/outputs from "black" box type unit components. Chapter 6 teaches how to simulate the model which helps in sensitivity studies before or after optimization. Mathematical optimization methods such as Lagrange Multipliers, Search Methods and Linear Programming among others are presented in chapters 8-12. For project work, possibly the best part of the book is contained in the Appendix. It lists thought provoking system design challenges that involve the full breadth and scope of the tools presented in the book.

The 3rd edition of this book can be used within the context of a senior undergraduate or first year graduate curriculum. The reason I write that is because Stoecker makes only passing attempts to elaborate elementary concepts in thermodynamics, heat transfer and fluid mechanics. So be warned since right off the bat, the 2nd chapter presents problems in the analysis of systems for optimization, for example a piping system for water conveyance or the design requirement to heat a swimming pool given various constraints. The fundamentals of the math behind the optimization and system simulation may not have changed. But I've rated 4 stars for this book only because its design methodologies can seem a little dated for our times especially. Stocker hasn't really edited the book to present new concepts on concurrent engineering, design for environment, design for manufacturability, quality function deployment, decision trees etc. The meat of the book is in its analysis and optimization as the title says but I still think that the new era engineer will be served better if contemporary upstream methodologies used to generate concepts, arrive at workable solutions etc can be presented in the book. Which is why Adrian Bejan's "Thermal Design and Optimization" is also another excellent text on this subject. Stay tuned for my review of that book!!

The Authority

Although most of the hunts O'Connor writes about could not be done today because the wild places he hunted are pretty much tame now, he does take us on one adventure after another. This book is better than any of the African hunting volumes I have read to date. It resides in a prominent position next to my "reading" chair and fireplace. This is THE classic everyone talks about when they mention classics. If you are lucky enough to find one in good shape, count your blessings and enjoy it. I miss the days when writer's like O'Connor and Carmichael wrote real and objective stories.

I subscribe to none of the modern outdoor magazines. Modern hunting writers write advertising copy pretty much. I prefer to read real stories from men who have actually done that and who are not trying to sell you something you really didn't need to hunt. Alas, we can only find that now in old books.

I really enjoyed this book. The author had a easy read style that engaged and taught at the same time. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in big game hunting. If you want to know what to wear though, this isn't the book for you.
