This book was made for winning

This is the first poker book that I have read all the way through. As much as I love poker, historically, I have not enjoyed reading about it. Most books about poker have these extended scenarios where the author gives a hypothetical example of the cards you have and the cards on the board and every possible version of what every other player might have. I find these stories incredibly boring and not helpful. They remind me of someone retelling a bad beat story at one table about something that happened at another table on another day at another casino. You had to be there for it to be interesting. Thankfully, this is not that type of book. Dr. Schoonmaker takes a different approach and writes about the way the game is played. He challenges the reader to take a hard look at themselves and their strengths and weaknesses when it comes to how they play poker. Even though I have been playing small limit games in Las Vegas as a tourist for over 10 years, I still found this book to be really helpful. I consider myself an action learner and most of what I know now about poker is what I've learned the hard way. It is only this year, though, that I have really focused on seat position as a strategy, thanks to Dr. Schoonmaker's advice. It has made a world of difference. I wish I would have read this book 10 years ago, I might have saved myself a lot of money. If you like to play small limit games, I think you would benefit from reading this book. It should pay for itself easily, the next time you play.

I have read most of the major books on limit holdem and have authored two of them myself as well as having written numerous columns for CardPlayer magazine covering Middle Limit Poker ($10-$20 and above). Due to the rise of no limit, most of the current action in limit poker is focused on small stakes holdem ($4-$8 and below) while the higher levels of limit holdem have almost died out. However, many of us still prefer limit poker and small stakes limit poker is very popular especially among those who are new to poker or just play for fun.

With the publication of this book, Dr. Al Schoonmaker has written one of the most important works ever on beating these small games. While there have been many books written about small games, they are all deeply flawed because they fail to address the impact of the rake, the jackpot drop, and other associated costs. Further, they make certain assumptions about how players react to bets and raises which turn out to be wrong. Finally, special rewards like high hand bonuses and other promotions that are funded by the jackpot drop can have a significant impact on how certain hands get played, which have never been addressed in previous books.

Al’s book does not present a formulaic approach to beating these games because there is no “formula.” He will not tell you what hands to play in what positions, when to bet or raise, and so forth. All this approach does is keep a novice from becoming a big loser. To become a winner, you need to understand things like pot-sizing, player types, seat selection, and a host of other factors beyond just starting hand values.

In closing, I know from having spent many hours playing with Al that he is among the most successful of all the small stakes players I have met. His book is a must read.

Terrific! A Must Read For The Typical Player!

“How to Beat Small Poker Games” is a terrific poker book!

Alan Schoonmaker, Ph.D. confronts the big questions: Can the recreational player overcome the overhead, rake, and promotion costs of a modern low-limit game in a card room? If that is possible, can a typical player lighten the weight of the obstacles which he carries with him through the door?

Following Alan's advice requires work and discipline. He explains why those are necessary. (Thank goodness, virtually no poker mathematics in this book.) Alan is aware that certain folks are happy where they are. Or are they?

He clearly states that achieving better results might not bring certain players more fun at the tables. As for me? I feel better when I do better. I am happy to apply his principles. Anything worth doing, is worth improving.

Alan Schoonmaker has extended his knowledge, rather like a handshake, to all the plumbers, waitresses, doctors, secretaries, young adults and seniors who sit, side by side, around the tables in card rooms spread across the land. We love the game. We want to book a few more wins at the cages -- just want to deal with the increasing high costs.

This book, to my knowledge, sets forth the cold, hard facts – present day realities, which I have never seen discussed in a book.

Most of us play cards to compete with others in an exciting game. Still, we want this to occur for a profit or reasonable price. At the same time, humans are “social beings.” I once asked Wasshim, our floorman, “What happens to the people who lose? Will the game dry up?”

Wass smiled, “Oh, they're still here. Some take a pauses to get another buy-in.” (This book will help keep the game going, despite higher costs. And all of us want to take fewer “pauses.”)

No, Dr. Schoonmaker is not my father! (I have never met or spoken with him.) He is known by his Good Works. You can wrestle the low limits to victory, if you follow his instructions.

A Great Introduction to C#

I think this book does a great job of introducing the basics of the C# programming language. I read the book cover to cover and did all the exercises and even created a few of my own. I feel pretty good about basic OOP concepts now. Mr. Bako seems to have a way with making those concepts simple, relatively straight forward and I no longer feel that I'm on shaky ground with OOP at this level of depth.

The book introduces C# using the console window and does not teach the .NET Framework. I think this is a logical progression in C# and you'll be glad you finished the book. I'm guessing that (.NET) may come in the next book that Mr. Bako writes for C#. Honestly, I can hardly wait for it. When will that book get written and published? That's hard to tell.

I highly recommend this book as an introduction to the language. You'll get your feet wet with C# and you'll make sense of the language to where you won't be lost when it comes to incorporating the .NET Framework later. If you already program in another language, you'll whiz right through this book. If you're new to programming period, you won't get lost and you'll feel much more confident in using your new skills. You'll gain that confidence if you make sure that you do all the exercises in the book. They're not hard and they get you thinking. Definitely worth the time it takes to do them.

Here's hoping Mr. Bako writes the intermediate level C# book soon. I haven't seen anything showing that it is in the works. Only a comment or so written in the book. I'm currently working on the .NET framwork with C#. Call it impatience, but I need to keep going with the language.

The book does a great job of teaching the very basics of C#. If you're on the fence about getting it, don't hesitate and go for it! The price is right and it's not a 1000 page tome to muddle through either.

Another great Joes2Pros book

I own 3 other Joes2Pros books on SQL, and when I saw there is another Joes2Pros book out, I didn't have to think twice to purchase this new C# book. I've had such great experiences with Joes2Pros books, I am basically waiting for each one as soon as it is fresh off the press. I was new to SQL, and when I finished the 3 Joes2Pros SQL books, I feel like a Pro. C# is widely used in the tech job market, and by the time I was done, this regular Joe truly feels like a Pro. This book is written in a very clear way, and really helps you understand the C# language. I love all the Joes2Pros books, I strongly recommend this book to anyone who wants to clearly understand C#, and actually have fun and enjoys it while learning.

Joes2Pros saved my life

I was attending a college class on C# programming in the .net environment and the instructor was teaching theory and then not letting us learn how to program. I was in big trouble, and was way behind. A fellow classmate suggested the Joes2pros book on c#, so I got it.

What an incredible difference. It literally opened my eyes to what I was trying to learn. Every chapter was well paced and well thought out. There were plenty of opportunities to code and to learn new skills. and each chapter's skills were building all the way through the book. I cannot wait for the next book in the series. I cannot recommend the Joes2pros series enough. Fantastic.

Maher argues that the Amiga's capacity to store and display color photographs, manipulate video (giving amateurs access to professional tools), and use recordings of real-world sound were the seeds of the digital media future: digital cameras, Photoshop, MP3 players, and even YouTube, Flickr, and the blogosphere. He examines different facets of the platform -- from Deluxe Paint to AmigaOS to Cinemaware -- in each chapter, creating a portrait of the platform and the communities of practice that surrounded it. Of course, Maher acknowledges, the Amiga was not perfect: the DOS component of the operating systems was clunky and ill-matched, for example, and crashes often accompanied multitasking attempts. And Commodore went bankrupt in 1994. But for a few years, the Amiga's technical qualities were harnessed by engineers, programmers, artists, and others to push back boundaries and transform the culture of computing.

A strong book about a fantastic machine

The Future was here (2012) by Jimmy Maher is an excellent book about the wonderful Amiga computer. If you are an Amiga enthusiast or someone who remembers the Amiga fondly you can stop reading now and simply go and order the book for yourself. You won’t regret it. The book isn’t perfect but it offers a very welcome in depth study of an amazing computing platforms.

The Amiga was designed in the early 1980s by a team lead by Jay Miner . The Amiga was based around the Motorola 68000 chip that was also the CPU for the technologically less advanced and considerably more expensive Apple Macintosh. What was special about the Amiga is that it had a chipset that enabled much of the graphics and sound processing to be handled by something other than the CPU. Agnes, Denise and Paula that formed the original chipset. Sprites, blitting and sound were vastly superior on the Amiga to other contemporary systems. The Amiga wouldn’t really be outclassed as a computer for 6-7 years after its release. Today, such a leap forward is unthinkable.

The book covers the Amiga’s creation, the chipsets and the operating system the Amiga used., Next the release of the machine and the ‘Boing’ demo are described. The details of why the Boing demo was impressive and some of the tricks that were used is well described. Then there is a chapter on ‘Deluxe Paint’ which was one of the most famous Amiga painting programs that could create color art that was not possible on other systems of the time. The Amiga’s contribution to 3D modelling - SSG and Sculpt-Animate are then described. There is then a chapter on NewtTek and the HAM system for using all of the Amiga’s 4096 colors. Following a look at the Amiga’s OS there is a chapter on the Amiga demo scene that describes how clever hackers produced clever short bits of art on the system. The penultimate chapter describes Cinemaware and Psygnosis and some of the games on the Amiga. Finally there is a chapter on why the Amiga died in the 1990s.

The book is a little disjointed. It jumps around a bit in time and from subject to subject. It’s also a little haphazard in what it covers. The detail in some areas is deeper than the detail in others. There is also not enough thought given to how the Macintosh managed to survive while the Amiga floundered. The explanation is probably that the Macintosh managed to find an application that it was ideally suited for that worked for many businesses, desktop publishing, while the Amiga’s great abilities never found a similar market that was large enough. In addition the Amiga failed to improve the technology substantially to keep it ahead of the competition. The failure to develop new chipsets is, however, covered well by the book.

Maher has written an excellent account of a wonderful computing platform that is now largely a memory. He manages to capture just how it felt to use a computer that did give a glimpse of the future and describe many of the features that made it so outstanding.

The Amiga was the second computer that I ever knew after the programmable John Sands Sega SC3000H. I fell in love with my Amiga 500 as a child so it holds a special place in my heart. In all honesty no computer has ever left such a profound lasting effect on me.

Jimmy Maher, thank you for explaining away the mystery. I have always known that the Amiga was a beautifully designed and built machine, but I never knew the technicalities of what made it so superior to the Macs, Ataris and IBMs of its time. I have always wished that the Amiga never died, thanks for nothing Commodore.

A good read for computer historians

I loved this book... and dislike it, too. let me explain. In this book, I was looking forward to reading about the development and progression of the custom chipset and OS that made the Amiga a joy to use and envy of all my nerdy friends. I expected to read about how developers/users pushed the machine to its limits to astounding results. Unfortunately, there is very little of that in this book. In fact, the author dedicates chapters to describe limitations and shortcomings of the machine.

I would have loved to have seen a chronology of the Amiga as a platform, from OCS to ECS and AGA and plans for future chipsets (and what related Amiga products are available today, even if only loosely though companies such as Commodore USA). Instead, most of the book focuses on the original Amiga 1000 design and limitations (a machine that was quickly replaced by its successors, so the author's choice puzzles me). There was no serious credence given to the expandability of any of the machines, implying that most owners had little more than the stock amount of RAM and no hard drive.

There is also a strange selection of programs analyzed. An odd amount of text in this book is dedicated to the functions of the Deluxe Paint series. Although mildly interesting, it is not what I had expected to be reading about in this book.

I doubt you'd know by this book that 90% of the Amiga's games even in 1994 looked far superior than most PC games. From 1985-1995, who owned a PC set up that could compete? PC's/sound cards/graphics cards were still expensive. And PC joysticks were crap unless you were playing a flight sim! Playing a game on a PC was an exercise in configuring your machine for hours to execute directX appropriately while hoping that everything you owned was compatible. But these are topics for another book, I suppose.

Why is there a detailed study of Menace? Not the best Amiga game by any stretch. He mentions a far superior looking/sounding game, Shadow of the Beast -- that would have been an excellent study! Why wasn't the CD32 discussed? Or higher end machines like the 4000/040?

Most folks who would be interested in buying this book would likely have used and loved the Amiga, but this book reads almost like an outsider's curiosity of the machine in retrospect, rather than a labor of love. Did the author ever own an Amiga "back in the day?" He admits to using emulators for most of his work on this book. This makes for a rather dry read. And what is with the extremely distracting choice of referring to all Amiga users in the feminine (I've never met a female Amiga user. I suppose some existed. somewhere.) It made me continually read the text again trying to think "who is the author referring to? Did he mention a female user by name earlier and I missed it?"

If you are looking for a fascinating platform study, read "Racing the Beam" -- it's about the Atari VCS (aka Atari 2600). Jay Miner essentially developed both the 2600 and original Amiga. But the Atari book is more fun to read -- how programmers did so much with so little. You find youreself "pulling for" the Atari, the little machine that could. However, "The Future Was Here" reads more like "the little machine that should have." I LOVE the Amiga (I still have my 2000 and it still works), so I just hoped for a little more here.

If you don't mind a rather indifferent view of the Amiga 1000 system and are in need of an Amiga retrospective, check out the book. It isn't bad -- but seems to be "the little book that should have."

Albert Hofmann, who died in 2008 aged 102, first synthesized lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) in 1938, but the results of animal tests were so unremarkable that the chemical was abandoned. Driven by intuition, he synthesized it again in 1943, and serendipitously noticed its profound effects on himself. Although his work produced other important drugs, including methergine, hydergine and dihydroergotamine, it was LSD that shaped his career.

After his discovery of LSD's properties, Hofmann spent years researching sacred plants. He succeeded in isolating and synthesizing the active compounds in the Psilocybe mexicana mushroom, which he named psilocybin and psilocin. During the 60s, Hofmann struck up friendships with personalities such as Aldous Huxley, Gordon Wasson, and Timothy Leary. He continued to work at Sandoz until 1971 when he retired as Director of Research for the Department of Natural Products. He subsequently served as a member of the Nobel Prize Committee, and was nominated by Time magazine as one of the most influential figures of the 20th century.

In 2007, Albert Hofmann asked Amanda Feilding if she could publish his Problem Child, and shortly before his death he approved a new and updated translation of his autobiography (first published by McGraw Hill in 1979). It appears here for the first time in print.

About the Author
Albert Hofmann is one of the most important scientists of our time, whose discoveries have powerfully influenced culture, society and science. Until its prohibition LSD was seen as a consciousness -expanding "wonder-drug", inducing self-awareness. Between 1943 and 1970 it generated almost 10,000 scientific publications, leading to its description as "the most intensively researched pharmacological substance ever". Hofmann realised that a substance with such profound effects on perception was likely to arouse interest beyond the medical field - though he never expected it to find worldwie recreational use. But "the more its use as an inebriant was disseminated... the more LSD became a problem child." And so LSD was prohibited in the late 1960s, and scientific research into its properties was terminated in the early 1970s.

THE DISCOVERER OF LSD WRITES ABOUT ITS EFFECTS ON INDIVIDUALS AND ON SOCIETY

Albert Hofmann (1906-2008) was a Swiss scientist who was the first person to synthesize and learn of the psychedelic effects of LSD; he has written/cowritten other books such as Plants of the Gods: Their Sacred, Healing, and Hallucinogenic Powers, LSD and the Divine Scientist: The Final Thoughts and Reflections of Albert Hofmann, The Botany and Chemistry of Hallucinogens, etc. [NOTE: page number below refer to the 210-page paperback edition.]

He wrote in the Foreword to this 1979 book, "Because I wanted to gain insight into the structure and essence of matter, I became a research chemist... I chose to specialize in research on the constituents of medical plants. In the course of this career I was led to the psychoactive, hallucination-causing substances, which under certain conditions can evoke visionary states... There is today a widespread striving for mystical experience, for visionary breakthroughs to a deeper, more comprehensive reality than that perceived by our rational, everyday consciousness... I share the belief of many of my contemporaries that the spiritual crisis pervading all spheres of Western industrial society can be remedied only by a change in our world view... The history of LSD to date amply demonstrates the catastrophic consequences that can ensue when its profound effect is midjudged and the substance is mistaken for a pleasure drug... Wrong and inappropriate use has caused LSD to become my problem child. It is my desire in this book to give a comprehensive picture of LSD, its origin, its effects, and its dangers... I believe that if people would learn to use LSD's vision-inducing capability more wisely, under suitable conditions... then in the future this problem child could become a wonder child."

After discovering the chemical, he explains, "I decided on a self-experiment... I was taken to another world, another place, another time... At times I believed myself to be outside my body, and then perceived clearly, as an outside observer, the complete tragedy of my situation. I had not even taken leave of my family... Would they ever understand that I had not experimented thoughtlessly, irresponsibly, but rather with the utmost caution... next morning... A sensation of well-being and renewed life flowed through me... The world was as if newly created. All my senses vibrated in a condition of highest sensitivity, which persisted for the entire day." (Pg. 16-19)

He notes, "Works of psychedelic art are not created while the drug is in effect, but only afterward, the artist being inspired by these experiences. As long as the inebriated condition lasts, creative activity is impeded, if not completely halted." (Pg. 56-57) He also admits, "LSD crises resemble psychotic attacks with a manic or depressive character. In the manic, hyperactive condition, the feeling of omnipotence or invulnerability can lead to serious casualties... inebriated persons... walked in front of a moving automobile or jumped out a window in the belief that they were able to fly. This type of LSD casualty, however, is not so common as one might be led to think..." (Pg. 67)

He recalls a meeting with LSD "guru" Timothy Leary: "My most serious remonstrance to Leary... concerned the propagation of LSD use among juveniles. Leary did not attempt to refute my opinions about the particular dangers of LSD for youth... I further objected to the great publicity that Leary sought for his LSD and psilocybin investigations, since he had invited reporters from daily papers and magazines to his experiments and had mobilized radio and television... Leary defended this publicity program because he felt it had been his fateful historic role to make LSD known worldwide... I ascertained that one did Leary an injustice by indiscriminately describing him as a drug apostle... My impression... was that of a charming personage... Leary also showed carelessness regarding charges and dangers that concerned his own person, as his further path in life emphatically showed." (Pg. 78-79)

He concludes, "I see the true importance of LSD in the possibility of providing material aid to meditation aimed at the mystical experience of a deeper, comprehensive reality. Such a use accords with the essence and working character of LSD as a sacred drug." (Pg. 209)

This is a fascinating portrait of both LSD and its social consequences, that will be of great interest to anyone studying such psychoactive drugs.

First read this book in high school and this new edition does not disappoint. Hoffman is a brilliant and compassionate character with an amazing story.

WARNING: MAD SCIENTISTS AND ILLEGAL EXPERIMENTATION

A shame that this auto-biography unfortunately has left out several dangerous side-effects concerning LSD and it's usage.

First and foremost, LSD is not a "glorious" drug as amped up for marketing purposes. It is a very strong and powerful narcotic that can be mis-used and abused if placed in the wrong hands (Please see current political status quo from 2012 and beyond to confirm this). It is no different than several other drugs circling around.

What they DON'T tell you in this book is that LSD can contribute to suicidal or inhumane thoughts of the 'user'. Everything is amplified and the user in question is more suspect able to it's surroundings. It is a horrible wretched thing, many victims are either "disposed" of or forced to be modified for the rest of their lives.

I have met those under the influence of LSD with horrible consequences. Often time the patient in question is forgetful or is constantly on a "trip". The LSD is a a horrible 'marketing' drug that has been involved in the harassment of soldiers and citizens of america alike:
