About the Author
DALE DeGROFF has been called “the Billy Graham of the holy spirits” by the London Tribune and “a master” by Martha Stewart, and is widely acknowledged to be the preeminent mixologist in the world. He’s been featured in dozens of magazines and newspapers, including The New York Times, The New Yorker, GQ, Entertainment Weekly, Penthouse, Food & Wine, and Forbes; his television appearances include Martha Stewart Living and Today. For twelve years, Dale ran the bar at New York City’s Rainbow Room and now serves as a consultant for such top restaurants as Balthazar. He has taught at the Culinary Institute of America (and stars in their bartending video) and the Institute for Culinary Education, among other venues. You won't find a better indroduction to spirits

- Great looking book and great photography

- Detailed intro into all the main spirits

- Detailed info on bartending techniques and measurements

- Good intro into cocktail glasses

- Large number of recipes

- The author definately has command of the subject

- Lots of references of wher to buy items for your bar

Cons

- Inconsistant terminology. He uses different names for the same spirit in different pages of the book which leads to a bit of confusion

- No cross reference of recipes by main spirit. I wish the book would have broken down the recipes by main spirit. Recipes with vodka, recipes with tequila, and so on.

- Some spirits are undefined in the book. There are several recipes that have spirits that aren't defined anywhere on the book.

Great content poorly organized

Try to imagine your favorite cookbook with the recipes arranged in alphabetical order. Bad. Now imagine all of the recipes had fanciful titles not directly related to their ingredients or method of production and THEN they were arranged in alphabetical order. Worse. Now imagine the book had a halfhearted attempt at any index. (Yes, there are a few alternate drink names in the index, but no attempt to, for instance, list drinks by base spirit, let alone minor ingredients.) Well that is DeGroff's Craft of The Cocktail. If you buy it, you pretty much have to read it cover to cover for it to be of use. If you just use it as a reference you will find excellent recipes of familiar drinks but miss all of the original drinks. (You don't know their names. They are originals. How are you going to be led to them in an alphabetical book?) I don't disagree with any of the positive things that people said about this book. (I did tell you to imagine your FAVORITE cookbook destroyed by disorganization.) But this book is a real disappointment and a missed opportunity.

Great book - small critique

I agree with everyone else's praise for this book. It's definitely my "desert island" cocktail book. There are many bad cocktail books out there, there are a few good cocktail books, but this is the only "great" cocktail book.
My only gripe is the index is not thorough enough to look up drinks by ingredient. For instance, you can't look up Benedictine and find all drink recipes containing that ingredient.

Don't let's go to Zimbabwe tonight

'Mukiwa' opens with a six year old boy describing what he sees of a local murder. So begins this enthralling memoir. This saga of a youth growing up in troubled Zimbabwe (Rhodesia at that time), is divided into three parts.

Book I, which comprises half of the book, is seen through the eyes of a child and told in that voice. As such it is reminiscent of 'Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight' by Alexandra Fuller. Both authors grew up in the eastern highlands of Rhodesia, near Umtali and the Mozambique border. One is a boy's story, the other a girl's and the differences are largely stylistic. They were separated by about ten years and 'Dogs' focuses only on one family, with the bush war only in the background, whereas 'Mukiwa' gives a broader picture of life in the remote, often dangerous, areas of the country. A preschool boy accompanies his mother, a doctor, to various bush clinics where she is both GP and pathologist. Before long he can recognize not only dead bodies, but also malaria, TB, leprosy and other ailments. In this lonely place he forms close relationships with the various African staff and describes the harshness of their life there as well as the miseries of boarding school for a young child.

In Book II, the author's hopes dashed that he cannot leave the country to attend university because of the compulsory conscription policy, finds himself in the midst of a brutal guerrilla war. His job is made harder by his ambivalent feelings as he frequently sympathizes with the `terrorists'. He leaves finally only when defeat is conceded.

In Book III he returns to the country, now with a law degree from Cambridge. Joining a distinguished firm in the capital, he is put to work defending prominent, former `freedom fighters' of the Matabele tribe. The new Mugabe government, dominated by the Shona tribe, ignores the fact that the Matabele had fought alongside them to win the war and are now moving against them, re-establishing the age-old hatred and rivalry between the two groups. With a bitter-sweet outcome of the trial, the author decides to become a journalist with a London newspaper. In this capacity he is urged to investigate reports of genocide and acts of brutality in Matabeleland, again perpetrated by government forces. His reports are largely ignored by both the Zimbabwe government and the international community.

Published in 1996, the book naturally does not cover the more recent atrocities metered out by Robert Mugabe. It is disappointing that very few dates are given, so that the whole story sort of floats in an indistinct time. However, it is ever-absorbing, sometimes shocking and by the last part, a totally gripping tale. I even thought it would make a very good movie.

Provides A Clear Understanding of Zimbbwe's Tribal Problems

In some respects this might be a white boy's account of growing up in Zimbabwe, sort of a counter part to Alexandra Fuller's "Don't Lets go to the Dogs Tonight, " a girl's account of life there. In fact they were raised in the same far east part of the country, but the Godwins were there ten years before. There is not the crazy, yet sympathetic antics of a mother that has had a breakdown, and Peter's father, unlike Mr. Fuller, had too much good sense to develop into an exciting character. That leaves it up to Peter Goodwin himself. And he certainly does the job. His own explorations and encounters with the curious Shona, curious other Africans, and curious whites are presented matter of fact, with lots of gritty detail.

I also understand much better the tribal aspects among Zimbabwe's native Africans, particularly between the Shona, the Matabele, and the Manicas. Their dislike for one another began many years before the white tribe ever arrived, and persists long after they left.

Among the many characters was Godwin's hippie cousin, Oliver, who traveled to Rhodesia with the notion that if he and his counterparts across the world could teach the whites of the country to treat the blacks with more understanding, more kindness, and more consideration, while providing them with a better irrigation system, lots more nourishing food, and better plumbing, Zimbabwe would evolve into a country where everyone could understand each other. Coming to understand the tribal background of Zimbabwe, and the many character sketches such as the one of Oliver are why I rated Mukiwa five stars.

A One-of-a-kind and very special book

Mukiwa is a one-of-a-kind and very special book. The author's descriptive abilities are exceptional. Having lived in Rhodesia/Zimbabwe for 13 years (1966 to 1980) and having first-hand knowledge of Godwin's material, I was totally enthralled with his narrative and the truthfulness of his account. I cannot recommend this book more highly. I wish there was a 10-star measure. It nudges Ruark's Something of Value and Wilbur Smith's When the Lion Feeds from the top of my list of all-time favorite books about Africa and the African Experience.

An old computer book that still has some value

When this book was written back in 1994, it was more difficult to program fast graphics applications on the PC without resorting to assembly code that manipulated the hardware directly. That aspect of graphics programming has changed drastically, but the fundamentals mentioned in this book really haven't. You CAN still do things the way that they are described in this book, the question is SHOULD you do things this way. That being said, the book is a very good education on how graphics tasks are performed by the hardware in a PC. If you are interested in such things, the low price of a used book might make it worth it for you.

Chapters 2 through 5 equip the programmer with a thorough understanding of the EGA/VGA and the relationships these adapters have to other display adapters, the PC, graphics devices, and graphics software. A tutorial supplies a background in C and assembly language for the novice programmer. The graphics algorithms used in the program examples are introduced in the computer graphics tutorial. Chapters 6 through 11 specify the function of the EGA/VGA cards. These chapters offer clear and comprehensive information on the display modes, display memory, graphics processor, downloadable fonts, color processing, control registers, and BIOS calls. This information is translated into programming examples in chapter 12. Seventy program examples are included to illustrate the power and versatility of the EGA/VGA cards.

Chapter 15 provides a detailed look at the function specifications for the IBM Applications Interface. This interface is used on the Graphics Accelerator Toolkit that was available from the author at the time this book was published and was supported by the XGA, 8514, and many Super VGAs. I don't even know if it is possible to find this toolkit any longer. Chapter 16 provides an in-depth look at the XGA cards. Included are the relevant register definitions and descriptions of the graphics accelerator. The XGA is treated as if it were another Super VGA, which it actually is. Chapters 13 through 30 provide detailed descriptions of the Super VGA chips as they existed in 1994. The scope and depth of information here allows the programmer to identify which chip is present; control, configure, and fine-tune the chip; invoke the advanced display modes; access up to one megabyte of display memory; and control the start address and cursor.

A great reference for graphics programmers

Loaded with general graphics subsystem information, plenty of graphic theory and a ton of examples, this reference is a must-have for any serious graphics programmer. In the style of Richard Wilton's, "Video Systems for the IBM PC and PS/2 Systems", this huge manual provides a reference to almost every aspect of the graphics processing of the IBM PC. The book contains C and assembler source as well as a lot of sound theory. It is essential to you reference library.

good for old-school

Back in the day, this book was like the gospel of video cards, I got it cause I am old-school, I still enjoy messing around with VGA stuff. The information in it is all legacy and can be found around the net but its nice to have a printed book. I actually expected to pay $1.00 for it simply because all its information is legacy. I was surprised but happy to pay the $20.

Shipping was fast! Condition was as described or better. Book is well laid out, with helpful shortcuts and other tips given as options. Pretty easy to follow. There's much more functionality to Word than I realized.

Reprint.... Nothing New. Don't Bother...

If you do not already have the "new Harmony Guides" from Interweave Press (edited by Erika Knight) this book is for you: all volumes are republished here. If, however, you shelled out nearly a hundred bucks for all of the revised Harmony Guides, you will not be getting anything new here. A few stitches have been given new names for this book, but everything here is identical to the Harmony Guides, and not the old Guides! There still are NO charts, except for the cable stitches, same as the Interweave guides. Here was a second chance to add charts and make these guides actually useful, but..... Nope. This book is being returned. My shelf space is too limited to have multiple copies of all the same info. Had they added charts, I would keep it for sure. But there was no effort put forth here. Just a reprint designed solely for more sales. What a disappointment.

Reprint of the new Harmony Guides

I didn't even think to check this book against other stitch dictionaries before purchasing because I have no other dictionaries from this publisher. Turns out that this is a reprint of the new Harmony Guides from Interweave Press. I'm not sure what the story is here, or why St. Martin's (Pavilion) is publishing this one, but there it is. The pictures have been color corrected differently and it's in a different binding. Otherwise, it is the same. As one other reviewer noted, there are still no charts. Charts would have been a very helpful addition and one I gladly would have paid again to have, even though I already have the Harmony Guides. To be clear: I really have no problem at all with reprinting info in different formats. I just want to be told ahead of time that the content is a reprint so that I can make an informed decision about purchasing. This book was promoted as "The Ultimate," but in reality it is a reprint. That needs to be disclosed upfront.

If you do not already have the new Harmony Guides, this is a great way to buy the collection at a discount. There are some great stitches in the book, and this is why I gave it 3 stars. But I must say: I am really extremely disappointed, as I love collecting stitch dictionaries. I pre-ordered and was waiting on this one with much anticipation.

I thought this book might have some stitch patterns not found in the Barbara Walker series but alas, that wasn't the case. The color photography is nice. The fact that there are very few charts might annoy some knitters.

About the Author

 

James G. Cappuccino is a retired professor emeritus of microbiology from the Department of Biology of the State University of New York at Rockland Community College in Suffern, New York. He received his B.S degree from Seton Hall University in 1951, his M.S degree (1955) and his Ph.D. (1957) in microbiology from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He was the author and co-author of numerous papers in the area of cancer research, and was a member of the faculty of the Sloan Kettering Division of the Graduate school of Medical Sciences at Cornell University where he taught microbiology from 1957-1970. From there, he taught microbiology, parasitology and clinical chemistry at SUNY Rockland until 2008. He was awarded the status of emeritus professor in 2012. In 1991 he was the recipient of the Chancellor’s award from the State University of New York for Excellence in Teaching. He is an emeritus member of the American Society for Cancer Research (ASCR) and an emeritus member of American society for Microbiology (ASM). When not writing he enjoys spending time with his wife Elaine and their family at their summer home at the New Jersey shore. He also enjoys theater, literature, and the quiet hour in his wood working shop.

 

Chad T. Welsh holds a Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Louisville, School of Medicine, also an M.S. and B.S. in Biology from Middle Tennessee State University.  Currently he is the Chair of the Division of Biological and Earth Sciences at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, MO where he has the privilege of teaching Microbiology, both for non-majors and majors, Cellular Immunology, Parasitology, and many other courses since 2010.  His research interests fall within bacteriology, eukaryotic cell biology, and immunology, focusing primarily on intracellular eukaryotic signals in response to pulmonary bacterial pathogens.  His mentored research projects with his students have spanned the interest areas of soil microbial ecology, immune stress responses in collegiate athletes, oral bacterial flora communities, and many others.
