Informative even for non-jewish readers

I am actually a christian and I've been reading a lot of self help books lately. I decided to check this book out since I have some Jewish friends that I spend a lot of time with and I wanted to learn more about their beliefs. I was pleasantly surprised to find that a lot of the information and philosophy contained within this guide can apply to just about anyone. The book goes into the foundation of motivation and success and how it relates back to the Jewish religion and culture. The advanced concepts and ideas are what really makes this book stand out. Overall, I learned about Judaism as well as some actionable self improvement concepts. 5 stars for an interesting and engaging read.

I Bought the book after many friends recommended me to do so, I started reading it and just couldn’t leave it till I finished the all book, I must say I enjoyed every word, a book full of wisdom that will upgrade the life of every one that will read it, when you read it you feel like you’re sitting with your personal coacher and dealing with all your personal issues, it will give you the tools to deal with all kinds of special situations in life.

Beginning with a conceptualization of online learning based on the principles of learning as a social process and globalization, the book meticulously details a journey from theory to practice,. informing the design of powerful and engaging online learning environments. A consistent theme in this book is the interaction among pedagogical models, instructional strategies, and learning technologies. This process is embedded in an integrative instructional design framework that is dynamic, iterative, and transformative, which enables the instructional developer, online instructor, school teacher, or educator to envision, plan for, and implement customized instructional designs for online learning.

This book was written after several years of designing, developing, researching, teaching, and implementing technology in online and distributed learning contexts. The proliferation of course management and learning management systems developed to deliver Web-based instruction and training in higher education, school, and corporate settings led us (the authors) to closely examine the instructional use of such systems on the basis of theory, research, and applied practice. The book reflects the results of this examination and our views on how course management systems and other online learning technologies can be used to design flexible and engaging learner-centered online learning environments.

The book title, Online Learning: Concepts, Strategies, and Application, reflects the theory-into-practice methodology we adopted when we were thinking about and presenting the content. Moving from the conceptual to the concrete, Chapters 1-3 cover the theoretical, pedagogical, and technological constructs contributing to the emergence of online learning, the online learner, and the online instructor, and the ensuing research implications. In Chapters 4-7, we discuss instructional design for online learning, providing the reader with a systematic yet flexible process that capitalizes on the interaction among pedagogical models, instructional strategies, and learning technologies. This process enables novices and experts to engage in systematic, effective, and contextualized online learning design. Chapters 8-9 provide a discussion of the evolution of authoring systems—from their use in developing computer-based instruction to Web-based instruction—and the emerging nature of course management and learning management systems. This discussion provides the reader with a thorough understanding of past, present, and future instructional technologies and a comprehensive set of tools and techniques with which to select appropriate e-learning delivery applications and implement online learning in multiple contexts.

In this book, we attempt to contextualize the content to three main educational settings: higher learning, K-12 school, and corporate training. Whether you are a teacher, an instructor, a professor, an instructional developer, a trainer, an educator, an administrator, or a graduate student, Online Learning: Concepts, Strategies, and Application will contribute in a unique way to your understanding, implementation, and delivery of online learning. Its nine chapters and interactive companion Web site can be consulted individually or collectively according to need and context. Briefly, Chapter 1 covers the evolution of distance education from pedagogical and technological perspectives and presents a theoretical framework for thinking about online learning based on learning as a social process and the impact of globalization on sociocultural practices. Several pedagogical and technological constructs for online learning are also discussed in this chapter. In Chapter 2, we describe the roles and competencies of the online learner and the online instructor and the learning affordances and logistical and implementation challenges that learning technologies present for the learner and the instructor in online learning. The chapter also covers institutional and administrative challenges associated with online learning, including copyright and intellectual property issues as they relate to electronic media and online courses. Chapter 3 provides an overview of the current state of research on online learning and a synthesis of specific results for application and consideration in designing, developing, and supporting online learning environments.

Chapter 4 details a systematic process of design and development for online learning environments called the Integrative Learning Design Framework for Online Learning. This framework is grounded in the time-tested processes of traditional instructional design as well as emerging pedagogy, the result of which is an innovative and flexible process for developing online learning environments grounded in learning theory. Based on knowledge acquisition models and learning theories that have permeated the field of instructional design and technology, Chapter 5 covers constructivist-based or learner-centered pedagogical models and includes a description of their instructional characteristics and application in online learning. Moving from models to strategies, in Chapter 6, we present 13 instructional strategies that synthesize the instructional characteristics of constructivist-based pedagogical models and describe their enactment in online learning, using specific learning technologies. Chapter 7 details a systematic process for evaluating online learning based on the developer's goals and contexts. The chapter provides a review of both formal and informal evaluation examples that can inform evaluation efforts involving online learning environments.

Chapter 8 provides an overview of authoring tools, course management systems, and learning content management systems, and their past, present, and future implications for the design and development of learning content and instructional activities. The focus of Chapter 9 is specifically on course management systems. We describe their pedagogical and technological features and provide explicit examples of how these features can be used to support instructional and learning activities in online learning. The chapter also includes guidelines for selecting course management systems from both an institutional perspective and an administrative perspective.

Each chapter contains the following pedagogical features:

• Learning objectives: A set of learning objectives is provided as an advance organizer for the content. Students can use these objectives as a framework for organizing their learning and as an evaluation tool for assessing their understanding after completing the chapter. These objectives can also be used as guidelines for keeping a reflective journal.
• Authentic scenarios: Scenarios related to the design, development, and implementation of online learning in higher education contexts, school settings, and corporate settings are provided at the beginning of each chapter. The scenarios are designed to provide real-world relevance to the chapter content and to activate prior knowledge.
• Prompting questions: Questions related to the scenarios are woven into the chapter text to actively engage the reader in thinking about the concepts and issues discussed.
• Figures and tables: Multiple figures and tables are used throughout the chapters and at the companion Web site to provide visual aids.
• Learning activities: The learning activities at the end of each chapter are designed to promote reflective thinking. Some are linked to the scenarios presented at the beginning of each chapter, others are linked to previous chapter content and activities, and many are linked to the Companion Website, which contains additional examples of the concepts discussed. These learning activities engage students in applying online learning concepts and strategies in real-world contexts. Book is designed cheaply, but the content is priceless!

I used this book throughout my entire Master's Program in Instructional Design and Development. It is a great resource for online learning, especially when designing constructivist learning environment. I do agree that the production quality is really cheap and most of the pages do look like photocopies, however my book has held up through 2 years of courses (and I reference it often). I would highly recommend this book for its content, if you can get over the photocopy-looking pages.

A poor quality textbook

The book I received has a poor binding, and the pages appear to be photocopied. Text is difficult to read, and images that were obviously originally in color are only black-and-white blurs. Amazon.com sent me a replacement copy, but it had the same defects.

I strongly suggest purchasing this book from a college bookstore or other reputable source if at all possible.

Nearly 300 full-colour photographs are included, and in many cases the same view is shown both in plane-polarized light and under crossed polars. A brief account of how thin sections can be prepared is included as an appendix. It is believed that the amateur geologist using these instructions will be able to make his own thin sections and, with the aid of a relatively simple microscope, enjoy the study of rocks in thin section.

Atlas of igneous rocks and their textures A companion volume to the Atlas of Rock-forming Minerals in Thin Section, this full-colour handbook is designed to be used as a laboratory manual both by elementary students of earth sciences undertaking a study of igneous rocks in thin section under the microscope, and by more advanced students and teachers as a reference work. Great resource

This atlas is a great resource and supplement to other 'atlases' of rocks and minerals in thin section. The micrographs are excellent quality and the descriptions are excellent. No such book can be comprehensive but this atlas covers a broad variety of igneous rocks and includes some unusual rocks that most geologists will never encounter. There is an added bonus: the appendix contains step-by-step instructions for preparing thin sections without expensive equipment.

True quality

Although at first look this book may seem overwhelming with lots of mathematical interpretations of quality, however, if you give the book a chance you will realize this book is in fact very basic and extremely easy to follow. Statistics may be intimidating to a person of any profession (engineer, general business or even managers) but the book really takes you from step one and gives a broad understanding of quality. The author of this book tries to offer the mathematical tools to people to improve their understanding of quality. The book also does a fabulous job of talking you through the history of quality(the gurus of quality and their systems) to the new quality processes, such as ISO and Six Sigma. Once I completed this book I understand the reasoning for having the mathematics as such a large part. How can one analyze quality without a statistical background? This book not only breaks things down very simply for a person but also gives a full understanding as to why each topic covered is essential to learning proper quality management. I truly hope to pursue a career in quality after reading this textbook. It takes very difficult topics to grasp (which are essential to todays business world) and makes the information understandable and accessible to a beginner as well as a great refresher.

Great Book

This is a great book. The text is surprisingly easy to read. The information in the book is presented in a manner that gives a great foundation for quality management without overwhelming the reader. The graphs are clear and actually help in understanding the content unlike other textbooks. Don't let the title fool you, the book isn't just for engineers. Any industry/business that is looking to benefit from a better understanding of quality should put this book on the short list for educational texts.

I bought this book because it is required for a class. I've taken other statistic and research method courses, so I already had some background. However, this book does a decent job at explaining and giving plenty of examples. The issues I have with the book is that there are some mathematical errors, they do not always explain where the values are coming from, and there are some examples that do not have an explanation of how to interpret the results. Some of the examples are kind of self-explanatory, so those ones do not cause an issue. Or at least, I think they are self-explanatory. Again, I have taken other courses for statistics and research methods. In regards to shipping, the book arrived earlier than expected, which was nice, and it was packaged in a box to make it snug. There was no visible damage to the book upon arrival.

Fantastic!!

I've been a fan of Barbara Erskine's books since I first read Lady of Hay over twenty years ago. I wasn't over keen on her last book The Darkest Hour but feel she's back on track with this one.

Miranda, Andy to her friends, goes to stay in Sleeper's Castle to house sit for her friend Sue, who is going to Australia for a year. It comes at the perfect time for Andy as she has just lost her partner of ten years and also her home and possessions to her partner's ex-wife who appears to be slightly unhinged.

Staying at Sleeper's she meets lots of new friends. Ella and Roy run a bookshop in Hay, Sian is a friend of Sue's who lives nearby and Bryn is the gardener who comes and goes as he pleases and appears to be quite surly. Then we have the mysterious Meryn who is mentioned a lot but doesn't appear until half way through the book.

Andy is a sensitive person and can sense ghosts. When she stays in Sleeper's Castle she starts to 'time slip' in her dreams. She goes back to the time of uprising and revolution between Wales and England.

Here she encounters Catrin and her father Daffyd who live in Sleeper's centuries before. Their housekeeper, Joan and a young boy Peter also live there. Edmund, Joan's brother is called on to assist Catrin's father. He and Catrin fall in love but there are many obstacles in their path.

This book is all action. The happenings of the past and present combine. There are lots of factual people from the past in the story as well as the fictional characters. And let's not forget the mad ex-wife and a cat with a very supercilious expression.

This is a fantastic read. History abounds here and the fictional story is every bit as good. The writing is superb as usual. Be prepared for sleepless nights if you start this book. You won't be able to put it down.

Read in one go

As usual with Barbara Erskine's stories, the reader is catapulted back to a different time in history. This time it is back to the times of Owen Glendower and the wars for Wales's independence from the English. Switching back and forth from then to today we are immersed in intrigue, mystique, supernatural forces and true evil. Historically, the book is well researched and the town of Hay and its castle once more play a prominent part in this book as well as in the very well-known "Lady of Hay" by the same author.

i love the way she weaves plots between the past and present. Sleepers Castle is an excellent read! My only gripe is too few of her books are available on kindle in the US. All her books are available on kindle in the UK. Please redress this inequality!!

Alison Daykin has been teaching spinning, weaving and dyeing since 1983. While studying for her HNC in Hand Woven Textile Design at Bradford in 2002 she won third place and a commendation in the Bradford Student Textile Design Awards. She now runs Alison Yule Textiles, producing bespoke hand-woven fabrics. Location: Willington, Derbyshire. Jane Deane is a spinner, weaver and dyer with 30 years' experience. Yarn Eye Candy for Spinners

First of all, this is a BEAUTIFUL book. If you love yarn, and love to look at great photos and dream of what you too could do with a little fiber and a big idea, you will like this book. It is not a book for beginning spinners. The spinning how-to section is very basic, with drawings, not photos. More useful is the plying section - how to combine strands to get different effects, but then again, this section is also drawings, not photos. The photos of the author's yarns are gorgeous, and she tells a bit about the kind of sheep/plant the fiber comes from, and a few properties of that particular fiber. I wouldn't call this a serious How-To, rather it is a very good idea book, and a great pleasure to leaf through over and over again.

Beautiful Photography but Not a Keeper

Obviously a tremendous amount of effort went into the photography in this book. The photos are quite lovely but for me what the nature inspired just does not quite make the grade for a book that I am going to want to come back to over and over. I wish these publishers would not feel that every book on spinning or knitting or any art has to have basic instruction in it. In this case it gives the book a bit of an identity crisis. It should be a book focused on natures inspirations for wool colors and designs only. I'm glad I had a look but feel that this was a waste of money - not a book to own. I am also rather annoyed that there was no preview of the book so I could determine that on line that this was not for me. I will not be buying books again that do not have a preview feature.

creative books series

Of the 'Creative . . .' series of books this is on the plus side. THe beginning is full of standard info re: wheel & hand spindle spinning, plying and even washing fleece. Not a book to actually learn how to spin, althou there is enought info there if you are really adept, just no trouble-shooting info. Arranged by color (?) There are examples of many, many different sheep breeds in the yarn section. A very pretty book to look at, there are better technical books on the subject. I think I will keep my copy, but I probably would not have bought if I had had a chance to browse it 1st.
