Awesome and helpful

This is a great book for artists and covers many different aspects of drawing male characters. Not only does it go over basic anatomy (and more detailed anatomy) it goes over many stances, poses, and even goes over clothing options. The book also goes over the many positions of hands and feet (which is great if you're like me and can't draw either). This is designed for an artist who is somewhat familiar with drawing the human figure but you certainly don't have to be an expert.

Reference Guide for Manga

This book is a great reference for male anatomy; unfortunately being pretty much the ONLY one in the series based on men, this is great for learning poses, gestures, and how clothes overlay the body. Not so terrific for ideas, like clothing or characters. I recommend it for those who are having issues with how the male body is formatted (I use it as a reference in that way)

Very Helpful Book

Like most people I have an easy time drawing girls, but a REALLY hard time with the guys! This books goes step by step explaining how the male body should be drawn, then moves on to clothing the character, and finally only the features of men. It's really helpful, the shipping is quick, and now I find drawing men really fun and easy because of this book! I really suggest you buy it! Also because it's a really good deal on Amazon. It's too expensive elsewhere =] Enjoy!

Seeing money in Jacob's powers, the theater's unscrupulous managers blackmail Sharon into convincing Jacob to go into the healing business with them. A literary curiosity. While resident in Hollywood in the 1940s, the acerbic British novelist Aldous Huxley and the playwright Christopher Isherwood collaborated on two screenplays. Though the actual screenplay of ``Jacob's Hands,'' the tale of a naive faith healer in the 1920s, apparently no longer exists, a narrative treatment of it was recently located among Huxley's remaining papers and is now being published. While elements of the tale are clearly reminiscent of these writers (Huxley's bemused fascination with America's pursuit of fame and fortune; Isherwood's deep interest in spirituality), the prose is at best workmanlike. That isn't surprisingthis draft was likely meant for private circulation, not publication. The story focuses on Jacob, a traumatized veteran of WWI who has fled to the Mojave Desert for solitude, but is discovered to carry an uncanny ability to heal in his handsas well as a gift for sensing the true state of someone's spirit. Used to practicing his gift on animals, he reluctantly agrees to try to help Sharon, a young crippled woman. He succeeds, becomes infatuated with her, and follows her to Los Angeles, where she has gone determined to become a star. Not surprisingly, Jacob is discovered by a huckster who uses the healer's love for Sharon (who has become a cynical, opportunistic entertainer) to turn him into a saleable commodity. Romantic complications and betrayals follow, and Jacob eventually flees back to the desert. It's hard not to imagine the film while reading this spare narrative, but equally hard to find much pleasure in the prose. I love this book!

The narration of this story is more simplistic than Brave New World, but keep in mind that Jacob's Hands was written as a screenplay, not a novel. Aldous Huxley and Christopher Isherwood have created a wonderful story and though the reading is easy, the questions brought to life in this tale are anything but. Jacob is the shy, gentle antagonist (who reminds me of John Steinbeck's Lenny)blessed and cursed simultaneously with the gift of healing. Exploited and heart-broken, he must determine the true benefit of mending the broken bodies brought to him when he can do nothing to repair their souls. Ideas in this story range from the physical hardships of the lame, to the role of spirituality in healing, to first loves and betrayal. Enjoyable and thought-provoking, I recommend this book to anyone who likes to ponder over Huxley's logic, or just enjoys to read.

HEAL ME!

Jacob's Hands is a tantalizing account of one man's eyes opening. Poor Jacob, so ingnorant of the world. He truly believes in goodness. This book is a look into the evils of human nature. Human nature is greedy and self serving, unfortunately, Jacob does not realize this. In attempt to give his love all that he can, he opens himself up to exploitation. This book is a reader's journey into the souls of the pure and the corrupt. Perhaps the authors whished us all to take a good deep look into our own souls and the manner in which we treat others. This book is just one more glorious demonstration of life by Adlous Huxley, this time with the help of Christopher Isherwood.

To Be Swallowed

The story goes that in 1997 actress Sharon Stone was reading the diaries of playwright/novelist Christopher Isherwood and discovered that Christopher has collaborated on a screenplay with novelist/essayist Aldous Huxley. She asked permission to search the estate, and in a dusty trunk was found a yellowed copy of Jacob's Hands. The best guess is that the fable had been written in the late 1930's, when (as the back jacket says), "a large sector of the intellectual community of Europe immigrated to the United States, to California in particular. What they found there was Nirvana - sunshine, freedome, mysticism, and the burgeoning movie industry." The two great thinkers met amidst this illectual Utopia and wrote this work together.

This is a short book, an easy read in an hour's time. As such, it is hard to say too much without giving it all away. Jacob is a good, honest, decent, sound, strapping young man. The kind of man that sees no ill will in others because he has none in himself. He learns as a farmhand on a California ranch that he has the power to heal. The power makes other love him, suspect him, and ultimately exploit him. He loves Sharon, the daughter of his former boss on the ranch. He meets Earl, a young millionaire with need of his healing powers. The three of them form a triangle that sort of reminds me of the ending of Ethan Frome (don't ask me why, though, since it's kind of a stretch).

The overriding theme, I believe, of the book is this question: is it more important to heal the soul or to heal the body? Are they ultimately connected or mutually exclusive? There is also some discussion of how sometimes we hold on to our illness, our weakness; we are wont to let them go. Because somehow they come to define us, and we survive more with the fear than we can live without it.

There is a brief introduction to the book by Aldous' wife, Laura Archera Huxley. It is useful in the fact that she gives some background into Aldous' thoughts on healing and the moral and religious implications of such a gift. It helps to set an informed backdrop to this interesting and thought-provoking fable.

This is a wonderful way to enhance your vocabulary. The two people who do the voices are fun to listen too. I listen while I drive in traffic and I have really been impacted by the new knowledge of words! It makes such a difference when conversing, having a larger vocabulary.

This textbook is amazing. Tons of interesting case studies with follow ups. An awesome and useful appendix filled with all the prefixes,suffixes, and root words. I only rented this for a medical terminology class but I think I might be purchasing it in the future.

If performing any type of self taught work, expect to use this title for a paper weight. Without prior experience, I found the book to be difficult to follow and the practice examples poor. The book also seemed very far out of date.

Great for beginners

I used this book to study for the Excelsior College's Introductory Statistics exam (college credit by examination, former Regents'), and got the maximum. I had the 9th (revised) edition, published in 1997.
Only knowledge of elementary algebra is required; no calculus whatsoever is needed here.
The book contains 17 chapters; for this exam I only needed about 13. Broad outline of content: summarizing data, probabilities and possibilities, expectations and decisions, probability distributions, normal distribution, sampling distributions, inferences about means/standard deviations/proportions, analysis of variance, regression, correlation, nonparametric tests.
I very much appreciated the way that the content was organized: easy to read, very structured, with clear and detailed examples. At the end of each chapter or minichapter - questions and problems.
Totally unnecessary, and outdated, are the computer generated examples that pop out now and then throughout the book.
In conclusion, highly recommended.

Star Struck

Great instructions for what appears to be a challenging project. The detailed instructions are suitable for a beginner but make sure you read the introductory pages. I bought this because I was fascinated with the strip piecing method of tumbling blocks that Marci demonstrates. It makes the construction of projects simple and so professional looking. Can't wait to get my hands on the ABC 3D Tumbling blocks book just released.

Easy way to make star blocks, with amazing results!

With this book, I have just discovered a different way to put stars together, and can't wait to try it out. It uses a Clearview Triangle 60 degree ruler, which I just bought, as you strip-piece the stars. Yes, instead of sewing Y-seams, you sew stratas, cut them with the ruler, align the pieces and sew them on strips, then join the strips to make the stars.

Marci gives an overview of how to cut the stars using the Clearview Triangle ruler at the beginning of the book, and then covers it in more detail under General Instructions (pay special attention to the pictures, and to how the ruler is turned different ways as you cut the strata). However, the tutorial videos posted on her site (find them here) are, in my opinion, indispensable for understanding the process and getting it right.

The patterns on the book are so tempting! I can' wait to make them...

Potentially disastrous is the negative-sum game that national depopulation triggers, as one community's gain becomes another's loss. Japan's Shrinking Regions in the 21st Century reveals how communities are responding positively to these emerging circumstances, delivering a message of hope and vitality to shrinking regions worldwide. The Historian's Wizard of Oz synthesizes four decades of scholarly interpretations of L. Frank Baum's classic children's novel as an allegory of the Gilded Age political economy and a comment on the gold standard. Students of history and economics will find two great stories: the dramatic rise and fall of monetary populism and William Jennings Bryan and the original rendering of a childhood story that they know and love. This study draws on several worthy versions of the Oz-as-Populist-parable thesis, but it also separates the reading of Baum's book in this manner from Baum's original intentions. Despite an incongruence with Baum's intent, reading the story as a parable continues to provide a remarkable window into the historical events of the 1890s and, thus, constitutes a tremendous teaching tool for historians, economists, and political scientists. About the Author

RANJIT S. DIGHE is Assistant Professor of Economics at the State University of New York at Oswego. His specialty is American macroeconomic history, and he has written extensively on American labor markets between the world wars.

Political and Financial Allegory in Baum's Classic.

This book is offered as a teaching tool on the history and economic issues of the 1890's.

Mr.Dighe chronicles the interpretations of "The Wizard of Oz" as imagery of politics and money by various writers starting with Henry Littlefield in 1964.

The author cautions that there are subtle differences between the movie and Mr. Baum's book. The color of Dorothy's shoes is one example.

Mr. Baum's political leanings are a relevant topic of this book. They are basically an unknown. Mr. Dighe suggests that Mr. Baum probably didn't intentionally write "The Wizard of Oz" as political/economic allegory. But the book fills that role surprisingly well!

The first chapter explains money and national finances in easy terms. Some of the subjects in that vein are; the gold standard, gold reserve, and fiat money. They are all efficiently defined.

The story of "The Wizard of Oz" is printed in this book accompanied by numerous footnotes that are educational and interesting. Those footnotes detail some of the interpretations from authors like Henry Littlefield, Hugh Rockoff, and Ranjit Dighe himself among others.

These interpretations are speculative, but some of them are glaringly obvious. The green in Oz's temple for the color of money is one.

He includes William Jennings Bryan's speech at the end of the book. I have mixed feelings on Mr. Bryan. While he advocated the federal income tax(I don't care for that)he has his spot in history that was well-earned by his presidential campaigns and eloquent speeches.

This book addresses a fascinating topic. The question of whether L.Frank Baum intended for his book to serve as an allegory for the politics of the 1890's is one that each reader will have to answer for themselves.

Excellent Classroom Source

Ranjit S. Dighe's coverage of Baum's Wizard of Oz as an allegory is well designed as a teaching source for Populism.

I found his chapter on the historical background of this period very helpful in understanding this complicated period. More importantly, the chapter that includes the original story with annotations that identify the symbolism is exactly what a researcher is looking for. References to Littlefield's interpretation and Bryan's "Cross of Gold" speech makes this book a complete source for introducing this parable to history or economic students.

Good background information

Great background on a subject that escapes most history textbooks. The author takes a "middle ground" and asserts that Baum is not really taking an active stance on the Gold/Silver standard, but merely using analogies from the political climate at the times. The theory makes sense, but a deep reading of the Wizard of Oz then seems to take on merely academic curiosity.

5 stars for the background of the story, but less 1 star for the seemingly academic (pointless??) analysis of this nice story as it relates to the Gold/Siver standard.

Of course, other writers have completely divergent opinions on Baum and his writings, so I would also get some books by those authors to even out the analysis a bit.
